Poster Printing Sizes: The first step to ordering a poster is choosing the size. Our posters come in several standard sizes but can also be printed in any size needed. The most common sizes are 11 x 17, 16 x 20, 18 x 24 and 23 x 36 and 24 x 36 but we have other common sizes that will fit into standard poster frames. Poster Printing Paper Finishes: Gloss and matte are coated papers, meaning they have a shiny appearance (gloss is more shiny than matte). Full color or 4 color posters are usually printed on either gloss or matte because the colors appear more vibrant. Smooth is an uncoated paper, which is recommended for single or multi color Pantone color projects but may be used for 4 (full) color when a more artistic look such as for a reproduction of a water color painting is desired.

Poster Printing Paper Weights: We have several different weights of paper available depending on the requirements for the posters. 80# text is the lightest weight paper but is thicker than ordinary copy paper. This is the most common weight for poster printing. 100# text is slightly thicker than 80# gloss text. 80# cover, 100# cover, and 120# gloss paper are much thicker and sometimes referred to as card stock. As a reference, 80# cover, 100# cover, and 120# gloss cover are the weights that are usually used for business stock. 16 pt gloss, 18 pt and 24 pt gloss are referred to as chipboard as they are much thicker than the cover weight papers. If you are going to be rolling your printed posters, we recommend either 80# or 100# text weight. 80# or 100# cover stocks can be rolled but sometimes the paper creases. Chipboard cannot be rolled. Art prints are generally printed on either 100# text or an 80# cover. Chipboard weights are often used for retail signage posters.

Most of our posters are printed using offset printing (also referred to as lithography) and all of the above stocks are available when posters are printed offset. Shorter quantities (generally under 50 depending on the size) are printed digitally and not all paper stocks can be printed digitally. However, our online poster printing quoting page will generate a quote no matter what paper is selected. Other materials for posters: Besides printing on paper, we also print onto gatorboard, styrene, cling z, and window decal film. We can also print onto any paper and then mount the posters on any substrates including foam core and others.

Poster Printing Colors: Our poster printing services are available for single Pantone, two Pantone, three Pantone, or 4 (full) color. Four color printing is full color printing that looks like a photograph. Pantone colors are also referred to as spot colors. Printed posters are available to be printed either via digital or offset printing. Offset printing is higher quality than digital printing, but digital printing is more cost effective when shorter quantities of posters (the quantities vary by the size of the custom poster but generally posters under 50 quantities are printed digitally).

Front/back poster printing colors: Our posters are available printed on a single side or printed on both sides. If your image is going to be the same on both sides, please call one of our online poster printing specialists as there may be discounts available depending on the of the printed poster.

Color Poster Printing Coatings: Posters can be printed with or without a coating. Coatings protect the ink from scuffing and fingerprints and enhance the color of the inks. Coatings are only applied to side of the sheet that is printed. Our color posters are available with an aqueous coating which is applied on press. Coatings are not available on digitally printed posters.

Color Poster Printing Lamination: Laminating protects the poster from moisture and dirt. Poster lamination is available in several thicknesses and can either be applied to one side or both sides of the printed poster. Lamination can either be flush to the edge of the sheet or a sealed edge (where the lamination extends 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch beyond the edge of the printed poster.
